Supposedly the oldest form of martial arts with its history seemingly steeped in every culture in some form or another. With the earliest recorded being Shuai Jiao (Chinese wrestling) used by the Yellow Emperor during his fight against the rebel Chih Yiu and his army in 2697 B.C. Also appearing in Eygpt in circa 2300 B.C and most famously Greece

(1100 to 146 B.C.)

A Brief History of Wrestling

Competion Rules

There are diffirent types of wrestling styles but the rules are the same almost identical however there are some differences.

 

Ways to win:-

Pin or fall on your opponent, this is when both shoulders are held on the mat.

Techinal fall this is when there is a margin of ten points.

Injury default this occurs when one athlete cannot continue.

Decision the athlete with the most points wins.

 

Points Awarded

1 point for takedowns, reversals and escapes.

an extra point can be given for holding your opponent on the mat for five seconds.

2 points for exposures

3 points for takedowns with exposure or high throw without danger

5 points for a high throw usually when the opponent iis thrown above the waist.

 

At the start of each bout, the referee will checks the fingernails, wetness on the skin, skin infections. The wrestlers then shake hands with the referee and with each other before the whistle blows.

 

The main objective in wrestling is to pin your opponent. This is achieved by holding his shoulder blades to the mat.  A pin will automatically end the match.  A pin is also known as a fall.

 

Points are awarded for performing techniques or moves that are within the rules. If a wrestler is unable to pin an opponent during the match, they must score at least three or more technical points to win the bout in regulation time.

 

If neither wrestler has scored three points at the end of the regulation time, the match goes into an overtime period the length is usually 1/2 the regulation time. The first wrestler to reach three points will be the winner. If neither wrestler scores 3 points, the winner will be the wrestler with the most points, or it will be decided by the officials if there is a tie.

 

Freestyle wrestling

Arms and legs can be used to defend an attack or execute holds, but you are unable to use your legs in an attack

Greco-Roman wrestling

In Greco - Roman wrestling you are not allowed to use your legs to execute moves, lift or trip your opponent.  You are also not able to attack your aopponents legs

Folkstyle wrestling

emphasis is placed on control alot more in this style than the others.  You may be able to gain extra points for controlling your opponent.
